I underwent bariatric surgery for weight loss under the care of Mr Kumar in August 2022. From the first consultation I was confident I had made the right decision on both hospital and consultant. Mr Kumar took the time to understand my history and my hopes/expectations for surgery. The nurses Libby and Polly who work alongside Mr Kumar provided excellent care throughout. I appreciated the friendly, professional and supportive approach from the whole team. I have been well supported post-surgery and thrilled with the results I have achieved at 6 months post-op. I was so pleased with the care I received that I recently supported a close friend to go through the same procedure under the care of Mr Kumar - the highest recommendation I can give! I would thoroughly recommend the hospital, and Mr Kumar and team specifically, to anyone considering gastric sleeve surgery.

I thought Dr Kumar was a very professional doctor who gave me a very successful hernia operation, he was friendly and laid out the surgery procedure plan very well. He was very easy to talk to and very genuine. I would recommend him to anyone.

Ref: Mr Bhaskar Kumar. 22/2/2023 Mr Bhaskar Kumar carried out a Laparoscopic inguinal Hernia mesh repair on myself six weeks ago today. Happily, I have made a full recovery & I have been discharged. From the outset, I found Mr Kumar to be polite, caring & professional in every way. An excellent communicator, he explained every stage of my care clearly & with attention to detail. I would have no hesitation in contacting Mr Kumar in the future should I need this kind of care & I would recommend his services to others. The care I received at Spire Hospital was the best I have experienced at every level. All staff, from the porters to the caterers, to the Nurses & the anaesthetist were caring & professional. This was Hospital Utopia! Thank you everyone!

Mr Kumar is straight talking when consulting and an exceptional surgeon. He explains what he is going to do and what to expect, with complete accuracy in my case. I did not need any pain relief after inguinal hernia surgery and full recovery was much quicker than expected. I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Kumar.

Mr Kumar was professional, clear in his communication and inspired complete confidence. All aspects were first class and so it is difficult to make any reasonable suggestions for improvement

Profile

I am trained in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, specialising in the treatment of oesophagogastric cancer, gallbladder disease, hiatus hernia repair and anti-reflux surgery as well as open and laparoscopic hernia repair. I also have significant experience in performing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

I have been a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital since 2014. I qualified from Leeds University Medical School and completed a two year doctorate in medicine (MD) before entering higher surgical training in Yorkshire and the North East of England. I was privileged to gain a vast amount of expertise in the specialist resection of oesophagogastric (OG) cancer in one of the largest OG cancer centres in Europe, the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne under the supervision of Professor SM Griffin OBE. Following completion of my surgical training, I was chosen for an overseas fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery with Prof. David Watson at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, Australia.

In my work in the NHS, I have led the development of an emergency gallbladder surgery service at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, improving patient access to prompt treatment of biliary conditions. Alongside busy clinical work, I am involved in postgraduate surgical teaching and training. My research interests include the management of oesophagogastric cancer as well as biliary and upper gastrointestinal diseases.

I have co-authored a leading textbook for the post-graduate FRCS examination in general surgery and have been an invited reviewer for surgical journals.

In all of my work, my primary commitment is to the patient and ensuring they receive the best possible care. My approach to patient care was recognised by the Eastern Daily Press sponsored Norfolk and Norwich Hospital awards when I reached the final round of nominations for the 'Patient Choice- Most Outsanding Individual Member of Staff 2017'.
